The most visited website for the employment of IT candidates, HelloWorld.rs, recently carried out a survey in which 2,238 IT experts took part. The results showed that the salaries of IT candidates are up to five times higher than the average salaries in other sectors, and numerous benefits, such as flexible working hours, work from home and private health insurance are just some of the reasons why this sector is among the most demanded ones in Serbia and a field in which there are almost no unemployed people.

One third earns over EUR 2,000, most still in foreign companies

According to the survey results, the average salary in the IT industry is over EUR 1,500. The survey has also shown that a considerable number of IT workers earn between 500 and 1,000 euros, which means that there’s a large number of those who have little relevant working experience in this industry in the market.

That salaries in this industry can be up to five times larger than the average salary in Serbia is also shown by the fact that 37% of the subjects earn over EUR 2,000.

Most IT employees work for foreign IT companies, as much as 55%, whereas 45% are employed in local companies.

Flexible working hours and work from home first on the list of benefits

In addition to high salaries, programmers also expect a good benefits system, so employers have to work increasingly more on the benefits that will attract new staff and keep the existing one. In that sense, answers given by IT workers show that their favorite benefit are the flexible working hours, immediately followed by work from home. The list then also features education/training/conferences, additional free days and private/voluntary health insurance. Benefits such as wellness packages, sports and recreation, food and drinks are at the very bottom of the list, which can also be an important indicator to all employers in creating benefit packages.

All these things considered, it’s no wonder that, when it comes to job satisfaction, as many as 82% of the programmers are satisfied with their jobs, and two thirds are not actively seeking jobs, but are interested in the offers.

On the other hand, what causes job changes are certain factors that affect this decision. Experts in IT find the salary the most important in making the decision whether to change their work environment, followed by factors such as working with new technologies, more challenging projects and a better work/life balance.

JavaScript at the top of the list of the most represented technologies

When it comes to technologies, programmers said that they mostly used JavaScript, HTML/CSS, JAVA, C#, PHP, Python. When it comes to technologies for which they want to develop professionally in the future, the first two spots belong to JavaScript and Python.

Regarding the type of software they are developing, more than a half are working on web platforms (55%), followed by desktop apps (19%) and mobile Android apps (12%). As for the operating system, Windows is still first (67%), whereas macOS and Linux share the second place with 16% each.

Secure jobs even without faculty degrees

In the past year, one of the most current topics has been the retraining for IT. A large number of candidates had the need to change their jobs and, due to the conditions, find a job in this most developed industry.

That IT workers are not necessarily exclusively those with faculty degrees is shown by the fact that nearly a fourth of the subjects only have high school degrees. The results also show that 35% of them have faculty degrees (bachelor studies only), 22% have master degrees, whereas 17% have college degrees.

To acquire new knowledge and skills, IT workers mostly use online courses, official documentation and blogs/forums.

HelloWorld.rs is a platform dedicated to the IT community with the highest number of visits when it comes to local IT portals, with the most registered IT users and the highest number of available job ads. At the same time, it is the largest local database of IT company profiles and the largest database of reviews of those companies, written by former and current employees (including experiences from job interviews and information about salaries). At the HelloWorld blog, IT workers can always find relevant information and advice on employment, professional development, events and trends in the local and foreign IT industries. It is precisely that variety of content which is the reason why IT workers of all seniorities gladly visit HelloWorld, even when they’re not actively seeking a job.

On the other hand, in realizing its main mission of increasing the transparency of the local labor market and the improvement of the working conditions when it comes to the local IT industry, the platform is available to all the employers which foster good practices when it comes to employment terms. Along with placing job ads, they also have at their disposal advanced employer branding tools for the promotion of positive examples, which change the image of the local market of IT employment.
