The third edition of the event Spanish Wines in the Heart of the City will be held this year within the Belgrade Wine Week festival (September 21-26). During this wine week, inspired by Spain, people of Belgrade will be able to visit various thematic workshops and Spanish wine tasting events, whereas the wines of the selected Spanish wineries will be available at special discounts at wine studios, stores, wine bars and restaurants.
This multiday promotion of Spanish wines in the capital of Serbia, during the Belgrade Wine Week, is launched with the aim of bringing the variety and the richness of Spanish winemaking and gastronomy closer to the audience. This year’s event Spanish Wines in the Heart of the City, behind which are the Economic-Trade Department of the Embassy of Spain in Belgrade and the citizens’ association Vinokultura, in cooperation with wineries, importers and distributors, will also be marked by a large number of educational wine workshops, where various wine regions of Spain will be presented to wine professionals, including several premieres. The education will cover Spanish classics: rich and complex red wines Rioja and Ribera, famous sparkling wines (Spanish Cava) and the increasingly popular white wines of Spain.
Spain is no longer unknown in the local wine market and wines from regions such as Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Navarre, or Galicia have found their regular place on wine shelves in Serbia. During the Belgrade Wine Week, as in the past years, we will have the opportunity to taste some of the famous Spanish wines and buy them at promotional prices. This year, as a new feature, the professional sector will be shown some geographic origins and varieties that are not yet that well known here, such as Txakoli – a very special and specific wine from the Basque Country, GP Toro, Bierzo, the Cava sparkling wine etc.
We invite you to visit one of the outlets and sales points which are taking part in the program during these six days in September and discover or get reminded of the fantastic world of Spanish wines, whose variety and flavors will certainly make an impression. The wines can be combined with Spanish cheese, the famous jamon (ham), sea food and fish or a custom-made tapa snack.
This year, we present:
Txakoli: a white fresh wine from the Basque Country, with a pronounced mineral content, is produced in 3 areas only. The wine tagged GP Getariako Txakolina is produced from grapes grown on only 402 ha. Considering the very small volume of production, the exports are limited. Traditionally, the Txakoli wine is served in characteristic glasses with a flat bottom and should be drunk before it loses its sparkling quality, called txinparta in Spanish.
Tinta de Toro: a local name for Tempranillo, or, as many believe, a locally adapted variety of Tempranillo, which is also the most recognizable grape variety for GP Toro, which is located in southeast Spain. This is an aromatic variety with a small yield.
Mencia: the pride of Bierzo and Valdeorras areas is, according to recent studies, very similar to the Cabernet Franc variety. High-quality wines are produced from it, and they are the most represented in the Leon area.
Cava: a sparkling wine, made through the traditional Champagne method, has been produced since the end of the 19th century. Although, historically, the center of the production of Cava is the area south of Barcelona, which even today accounts for 85% of the production, producers of this sort of wine can now be found in 7 Spanish regions. Each producer makes a special cuvee from grapes from a certain zone. There are 7 types of Cava, which differ in the degrees of sweetness. The word Cava originates in the Spanish word for “a cellar”, which has with time become a phrase denoting the traditional way of production.
– In addition to numerous medals, at this year’s Decanter, 9 Spanish wines got the competition’s highest praise.
– Spanish wines won 631 medals at the MUNDUS VINI Wine Award: 9 grand gold, 344 gold and 278 silver medals.

– The great variety of climate belts, and with them of authentic terroirs, enables Spanish winemakers to produce a wide variety of wines: red, white, rose, sparkling Cava, sweet wines, fortified sherries…
– Spain is the country with the largest areas under vine, and grapes are grown even on the black volcanic ash of the Spanish islands, such as Lanzarote. Spain is the third biggest producer of wines in the world and it is the leader in the production of organic wines.
