Agreement on Continuation of Construction of Center of Excellence in Kragujevac Worth EUR 10.5 Million Signed – Deadline for Completion of Works One Year

The agreement on the continuation of the construction of the Center of Excellence in Kragujevac was signed by the director of the Unit for Public Sector Project Management, Dusan Kovacevic, and the director of the selected contractor Ino Backa, Danilo Babic.

The value of the agreement is slightly over EUR 10.5 million, according to the website of the City of Kragujevac. The construction is financed with the proceeds from the loan of the European Investment Bank, and the city of Kragujevac has provided RSD 40 million. The selected contractor consists of a group of bidders, Ino Backa, Graditelj and Institut za Bezbednost i Preventivni Inzenjering, all three companies from Novi Sad, who have 365 days to finish the job.

– Scientific research in the fields of biomedicine, stem cells, biomedical engineering, information technologies and other fields that are developed at our university will be carried out at this center. The center will contribute to the hiring of primarily young researchers, for whom, with the help of the state and the city, we’ve secured over 200 flats and we hope that, in addition to the good living and working conditions, they will also get a new space for their scientific research activities – said the rector of the University of Kragujevac, Dr Nenad Filipovic.

Let us remind that the agreement on the construction and equipping of the Center of Excellence of the University of Kragujevac was signed back in 2013 between the Republic of Serbia, the Ministry of Education and Science, the City of Kragujevac, the University of Kragujevac and JUP Istrazivanje i Razvoj (now called the Unit for Public Sector Project Management), whereas the company Masinoprojekt Kopring prepared the preliminary design and the main project in 2014.

The construction started in late 2015. The Center of Excellence with a stem cell bank is a science institution of national importance, which is supposed to operate as part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Kragujevac according to the 2013 agreement.

The foundation stone was laid down in January 2016, and the initial deadline for the completion of the works was April 2017. The construction was stopped, however, due to the termination of the agreement with the contractor. The structure is complete, as is a part of the construction-finishing works and the landscaping works. The total works are 32% complete. The continuation of the works was also announced back in 2018.
