New Border Checkpoint Between Serbia and Bulgaria in Petacinci Village – Urban Plan Prepared, Realization Expected

The efforts toward establishing a new border checkpoint between Serbia and Bulgaria in the village of Petacinci, which will be very important for the local economy, are intensifying, stated the president of the municipality of Dimitrovgrad, Vladica Dimitrov.

He said that this border checkpoint, for which the urban plan has already been completed, would unload one of the busiest border checkpoints in the country, Gradina, especially during the summer months, and that it would also greatly facilitate the inflow of tourists from the neighboring Bulgaria, who visit this area and its religious sites and restaurants in great numbers.

– This border checkpoint is very important. It is designed only for passenger traffic, not for cargo traffic. It is very important because, in this period when the area is the most beautiful and attractive to tourists, in the spring and the summer, there are jams in Gradina, so tourists from Bulgaria are not coming, and that’s an important tourist potential, because a city with a population of two million, Sofia, is only fifty kilometers away – Dimitrov said.

He added that the detailed regulation plan and the urban project had been ready back in 2014 and that what remained to be done was for the commission, formed by the Government of Serbia, to adopt the conditions for border-crossing.

– The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already sent us a memo telling us to continue planning that border checkpoint – Dimitrov said.

During the summer jams in Gradina, the traffic is very slow at that border checkpoint. This summer, there have been situations where the length of the rows of vehicles exceeded 10 kilometers. This not only slows down the traffic on a very important road corridor, but also decreases passenger safety.
