The idea of reconstructing Sremski Karlovci dates back to 1990. The basic intention was for Karlovci to get a law, modelled after the one pertaining to Dubrovnik, that would protect cultural monuments and help preserve them.
– It is very important to have a law, because that is the way of saving the facades, which are largely privately owned. These are buildings and facilities which are protected by the state and which are of high importance, like the St. Nicholas Church, the upper and lower churches, the Catholic Church, the Patriarchate Building, the old and new ones – said Zarko Dimic, the director of the Sremski Karlovci Archives.
The “Sveti Arsenije Sremac” building (the “Bogoslovija” building”), with its tradition of 230 years, is one of the buildings where investments will be made in both its interior and the exterior.
– We will be able to modernize our dormitory, which is very important to us, and we will be able to use it for summer schools, historical schools, the language school, and we will also be able to finish and equip the memorial room-treasury – said Jovan Milanovic, the rector of Bogoslovija.
The finances for the reconstruction and development have been set aside from the budgets of the state, the Autonomous province of Vojvodina and the municipality.
