The newly formed Advisory Board of the Research-Development Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia consists of recognized experts in the field of information-communications technologies from the scientific environment and the economy, the Government of Serbia announced.

Among them is Dr Nicu Sebe, known in the public as the scientist who has decoded the emotions hidden behind the mysterious smile of Mona Lisa by implementing emotion-recognition software.

Analyzing the famous portrait, a Renaissance masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci, working at the University of Amsterdam and in cooperation with the University of Illinois, he developed software which interpreted the emotions behind the mysterious smile by analyzing the facial features.

The results showed that Mona Lisa is predominantly happy – 83%, 9% disgusted, 6% fearful and 2% angry, which caused a lot of interest from the experts in this field of artificial intelligence.

This scientist has also cooperated with the acting director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Dr Dubravka Culibrk, who pointed out that the institute would have groups for computer vision, language recognition, application in healthcare, mathematical bases for machine learning and a group from new fields.

– For that reason, we certainly established a mentorship program with our people from all over the world who will help us here, but also the Advisory Board, consisting of experts with an enviable degree of knowledge and world experience, which will enable us to become a place that will provide Serbian researchers with the best framework for development and which will constantly display innovation – Culibrk concluded.

In addition to professor Sebe, the team features lecturers, researchers and renowned experts from institutes such as Columbia University, Temple University and Technical University Munich.

The Advisory Board also features representatives of global companies which are leaders in the field of artificial intelligence, among them Sasa Ostojic, one of the operating partners in the Playground Global fund, who will contribute his thirty-year experience in the leading positions in companies from the Silicon Valley.

The composition of this team, which will help the development of the institute and its goal of becoming a “factory” of leaders in AI by providing advice, is available on the recently uploaded webpage of the institute at ivi.ac.rs.

The founding of the institute was launched at the initiative from the Strategy of Development of Artificial Intelligence in the Republic of Serbia for 2020-2025 and the Action Plan for 2020-2022 for the implementation of the strategy.

The institute, headquartered in Novi Sad, was founded by the government in March.
