At the next session, members of the city parliament of Novi Sad are to decide on the proposition of the detailed regulation plan of the Cenej Airport. The plan envisages the construction of a modern airport, which will meet all the conditions for passenger traffic.

The area covered by the plan is 116.85 ha and takes up the area of the existing agricultural-sports airport Novi Sad, a part of the agricultural land and a part of IIA-100 state road Horgos-Subotica-Backa Topola-Mali Idjos-Srbobran-Novi Sad-Sremski Karlovci-Indjija-Stara Pazova-Belgrade. The existing agricultural land covered by the plan is meant for the purposes of the realization of the planned airport, commercial features and agricultural land meant for the establishment of farms.

The existing airport is of an agricultural-sport character and, with its grass runway and technical characteristics, does not meet the requirements for civilian passenger transport. For that reason, the plan envisages the construction of a modern airport which will meet all the requirements for passenger traffic.

Regular line traffic, operations of low-cost companies, tourist charter flights, charter flights for workers and air-taxi flights are planned at the airport.

Regional traffic is planned to secure the connecting of Vojvodina with the business center of the former Yugoslav states and other neighboring countries. Furthermore, the plan is to retain all the functions of sports and agricultural aviation as well.

The complex consists of two parts, namely, a sports part of the airport, with 3.14 ha, and a new passenger and cargo part, with 3.58 ha.

Let us remind that, according to the Spatial Plan of Serbia from 2021 to 2035, published this April by the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Serbia is to get two new international airports, one near Dobanovci, the other near Novi Sad.

When it comes to Novi Sad, however, the construction is planned in a location around 15 km southeast of the city, in close proximity to the A1 highway, on the Kovilj-Sajkas-Budisava stretch, on an area of around 300 ha and with the 4E airport code.

When asked why Sajkas was chosen instead of Cenej, the ministry told our portal that the exact location of the airport would be determined in the further preparation of the planning and technical documentation.
