Regional Landfill for Sremska Mitrovica and Sabac - 11 million EUR for solid waste management project
Construction of the regional landfill, worth about 11 million EUR, will solve the problems regarding communal waste for the inhabitants of Sabac and Sremska Mitrovica by the middle of 2012. Beginning of construction of the landfill is announced for the Autumn of this year, and the contractor will be known for 1-2 weeks. Regional landfill includes construction of a transfer station in Sabac and construction of the main location for disposal in Sremska Mitrovica, with the entire infrastructure in accordance with applicable laws and directives for the standards of the system of waste management. The aim of this project is to improve environmental protection by providing a safe system of solid waste disposal.
Funding for the construction of the landfill are provided through donations from the EU (IPA 2008) 7.3 million EUR, while the municipal budget allocated 2.3 million EUR, and the Fund for Environmental Protection has invested 87 million dinars.
Location in Sremska Mitrovica for building a regional landfill, Jarak, has been in use as a municipal non-sanitary landfill since 2001. Three cells were covered with solid waste, and the fourth is currently in use. Further use of non sanitary landfill would negatively impact on the environment, and therefore this project includes relocation of Mancelo channel, construction of new landfill cells, removing of waste from non-sanitary cells and deposition in sanitation cells, construction of the systems for burning of landfill gas, construction of the separation line, construction of transfer stations and closing of non-sanitary landfills in Sabac. Work will be performed in 3 stages, and life duration of such a sanitary landfill is about 15 years.
The opening of this landfill will significantly improve the quality of life and sanitary protection of about 200,000 inhabitants of this area and reduce the risk to human health. The landfill will provide increased coverage of solid waste collection services to 100% by 2012 in urban areas and 50% in rural areas. The regional solid waste management will prevent pollution of areas near the river Sava.
The Project of the regional solid waste management will be presented on July,14th in Sremska Mitrovica, which would be presented by the Head of Delegation of the European Union in Serbia, Ambassador Vincent Deger, Prime Minister of Vojvodina, Bojan Pajtic, Minister of Environmental Protection, Oliver Dulic and the Mayors of Sremska Mitrovica and Sabac, Branislav Nedimovic and Milos Milosevic.
