The Ministry of Culture of Serbia has filed a request to the UNESCO for the nomination of the plum brandy for the representative list of intangible cultural heritage.

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and Information Maja Gojkovic announced at the parliament yesterday that the ministry had filed this request.

– We have just applied today. Seeing how the listing of the Serbian round dance on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list was praised, we filed a candidacy for the plum brandy as well and I hope that it will be listed next year, after which we will nominate Slovak naïve painting. We are working on it patiently – Gojkovic said.

The plum brandy (sljivovica) should be listed as an element of social practice and knowledge regarding the preparation and use of the traditional plum drink.

Serbian-produced plum brandy was only certified for its geographic origin by the EU in 2016. Since then, it has borne the protected name of “Srpska sljivovica”.

The UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage already lists four items from Serbia: Zlakusa pottery making, hand-wheel pottery making in the village of Zlakusa; Singing to the accompaniment of the Gusle; Kolo, traditional folk dance; and Slava, celebration of family saint patron’s day.
