– Around five million years ago, the then Pannonian Sea flooded the surrounding areas, leaving behind it numerous shells of aquatic invertebrates. The shells are most often found broken and indicate occasional motion along the bottom in the ebb and tide zone. The numerous fossils of the aquatic fauna lead to the conclusion that the living conditions in the then saltwater environment were very favorable – the museum says.
At the moment, the Museum of Smederevo has 17 kinds of fossil mollusks and shells from this period.
