In response to MPs’ questions about the jadarite mine that Rio Tinto plans to open near Loznica, the prime minister said that the environmental protection standards would be complied with.
Brnabic said that the company’s investments of over EUR 1.5 billion and the fact that the site secures 10% of the global reserves of lithium for Serbia, with Rio Tinto getting the right to exploitation, were the public interest.
– It will be impossible to export lithium from Serbia as a raw material. We need to make a semi-product or a final product, so that the economy would be able to develop – the prime minister said and explained that Serbia might become a European center for the production of batteries, electric vehicles and other lithium-based products.
