Despite the new warnings coming from the U.S.A. regarding the project worth over EUR 9 billion, the Russian boat Fortuna is tracing the 2.6-km route for the gas pipeline in the German exclusive zone in the Baltic Sea, a spokesperson told France Press.
The announcement of the continuation of the works came nearly a week from the date the Russian boat entered the location.
The majority of the gas pipeline has already been laid down. However, the company Allseas, headquartered in Switzerland, which controls the boats which are laying down the undersea parts of the gas pipeline, stopped the activities in December 2019, when U.S. President Donald Trump signed an act threatening sanctions against the companies related to the project.
The U.S.A. is a vocal opponent of the project which is supposed to transport gas down the route of around 1,200 kilometers. The American government believes that it increases Europe’s energy dependence on Russia. East European countries also oppose the project, AP reports.
NordStream 2 is owned by the Russian Gazprom, along with investments from several European companies.
The Kremlin is accusing Washington of trying to stop the project in order to force European clients to get American liquefied gas instead of the cheaper natural gas from Russia.
Germany stood up to the American threats of sanctions outside its territory on companies taking part in the construction of the gas pipeline.
The U.S. Ambassador to Berlin, Robin Quinville, called on Germany and the EU a week ago to impose a moratorium on the construction of NordStream 2, which, according to the U.S.A, is a “political tool of the Kremlin”.
