Rain Gardens – Against Floods in Cities through Landscaping

(Illustration) We have recently witnessed that cities find it increasingly difficult to deal with the problem of rainwater due to the overloaded sewer systems, with streets often ending up flooded as rainwater is not drained properly. Although there is no quick solution to this problem, there are examples of redirecting rainwater and using it more efficiently in the world. One such solution is a rain garden.

Rain gardens are depressions most often built near traffic routes or impermeable ground, with the purpose of absorbing excess rainwater, thereby unloading the sewer system.

Such a depression should be filled with a layer of porous materials (large-granule gravel) on the top, in which a perforated drainage pipe is installed, which then directs the excess water toward the sewer system. The advantage is that a certain amount of water is absorbed by the plants and other elements within the depression, whereas the amount of water that goes into the sewer is 40-50% smaller, Nikola Petrovic of the Green Decor company says for the Gradnja portal.
