Italian company "Sorgenia Menowatt", dedicated to promotion and development of energy efficiency for public lighting, presented itself to Zrenjanin, which will be, in case the agreement is reached, the first city in Serbia to cut the lighting costs by 30%.

Italians have developed the street lighting system that reduces the costs of maintenance and electric energy and guarantees stable and equal light in the streets with reduced dispersion of light. It was said at the presentation that the services of company "Sorgenia Menowatt" enabled electricity saving and the return of investment within three years. Similar project has recently been implemented in Montenegro.

The fact that the problem of street lighting is evident is confirmed by numerous appeals from Zrenjanin's and local communities in the neighboring places for something to be done concerning that. Public lighting system is often out of use, and then it takes weeks to repair it.

Branislav Knežević, the CEO of the Directorate for City Development and Organization, says that the plan for year 2010 is that regular activities from the maintenance programme be resumed, including maintenance of public lighting system.

The expert service of the Directorate analyzed the condition of public lighting system in the city, defined the needs and made the review of all necessary investments works on public lighting system, but there is no money for the works.

The most important thing in regular maintenance of public lighting is replacement of damaged or old elements on lamps and repair of substations and the network.

Replacement of old and damaged poles will also be done, which are regular and necessary activities in the maintenance of public lighting system.
