The canal will connect the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, north and south of Istanbul, as alternatives to the Bosphorus, one of the busiest straits in the world.
The tender pertains to the phase of planning the reconstruction of the two bridges located in the area where the Istanbul Canal is expected to be built, a project supported by president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The 45-km kilometer canal will have a capacity of 160 vessels a day.
More than 70,000 people signed the petition against this project, but it still obtained the building permit.
