National CERT publishes recommendations for prevention and recovery from ransomware attacks

To the end of raising awareness of the importance of prevention against security risks and measures of protection against them, the National Center for the Prevention of Security Risks in ICT systems of the Republic of Serbia (CERT) has published recommendations for prevention and recovery from ransomware attacks.

They advise regularly updating the operating system and the antivirus software and not opening attachments in emails sent from unknown and suspicious looking addresses.

The National CERT says that ransomware is the kind of malicious software (malware) that denies access to an ICT system or data until ransom is paid. It is usually spread through email or by users visiting infected sites, and everyone who keeps important data on the computer or the network is at risk.

Users should not click links or open attachments coming from unknown and suspicious looking addresses or leave personal data when replying to emails, unwanted phone calls or messages.

Special recommendations pertain to companies.

If a ransomware attack is successful, the National CERT recommends that the ransom not be paid and that the incident be reported to the competent organs.
