2019 RETROSPECTIVE – Investments in TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND IT most interesting to eKapija users

The sector of information technologies in Serbia has surpassed agriculture as the most profitable one in Serbia in the past two years. The export of software is five times more valuable than the export of raspberries and has already exceeded EUR 1 billion, an experts estimate that it might reach the amount of EUR 1.5 billion in the upcoming years, but also that it is necessary to invest in knowledge and new technologies.

All things considered, the state has seriously decided to invest in the future and the past year, when it comes to telecommunications and IT, was marked by the arrival of large world companies to Serbia and investments in digitization, knowledge and development of innovations in this field.

Here are the events in the IT sector that marked the year 2019.

Far ahead of everything else, in the first spot, is the beginning of the construction of the NCR campus in New Belgrade. This investment by the American software giant, worth EUR 90 million, is the most modern technological campus in Europe and will at the same time be their largest company in the world, with the most employees, including the campus in Atlanta.

The second spot belongs to the new, innovative smart building of Nordeus in New Belgrade. This Belgrade-based company moved in April to a modern gaming studio which saves energy and where experts from 22 countries work, and the facilities available to them include a large restaurant, fitness rooms, a sports bar, showers...

In the third spot is Telekom Srbija and its numerous investments in cable operators, which continued in 2019. In the previous year, the value of these acquisitions amounted to nearly EUR 300 million, and, since January 2019, Telekom has bought another 6 mobile and cable operators, including SRB Digital, Masko, Telemark, Polaris Media...

The fourth place belongs to the first of the two science-technology parks on our list, the Science-Technology Park in Novi Sad. This is a joint project of the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Provincial Government, worth EUR 26 million.

The facility of a total of 30,000 m2 will be used from late January by the Faculty of Technical Sciences, startups and science institutes founded by the Provincial Government.

The construction of the State Data Center in Kragujevac, which began in mid-2019, placed fifth on our list. The authorities claim that this data center will be one of the ten most efficient in the world and that the project, whose first phase is worth EUR 30 million, will enable a more efficient provision of various services of eGovernment for the citizens, the economy and the state. According to the announcements, the construction should be completed in mid-2020.

The sixth spot belongs to an investment which will enable the use of the cloud technology in schools and the public administration, as well as the opening of another data center in Kragujevac. This is another American software company, Nutanix, which signed a memorandum of understanding regarding said investments with the Office for IT and eGovernment. The memorandum entails the opening of an innovation center for digital transformation in Belgrade.

In the seventh spot is another innovations center. This time, as announced, it should be built by the Chinese technology giant Huawei, also in Belgrade. Together with the Serbian government, Huawei will develop the Smart Cities project, and the Huawei Innovation Center for Digital Transformation will be the regional center for the Western Balkans with the seat in Belgrade.


The eighth place belongs to the exclusive news regarding another Chinese company, Quectel Wireless Solutions. This leading provider of mobile modules in the world and a pioneer in the development of the 5G network arrived to Serbia looking for quality software engineers and is founding a research and development center, its only such center in Europe, which should provide support to its numerous clients in Europe beginning with 2020.

The ninth spot belongs to another science-technology park, the one in Nis. It was announced that the city on the Nisava would get an STP on a total area of 12,234 m2, as well as a multipurpose laboratory unit within the Faculty of Electronic Engineering by the summer of 2020, which will open the possibility of forming companies based on innovations arising from scientific research.

The completion of the construction of the new building of Radio-Television of Vojvodina in Miseluk, Novi Sad, placed tenth. Completed in late November, this project, worth RSD 3.2 billion, was initiated in August 2017 with the demolition and removal of the ruins of the building destroyed in the NATO bombing of 1999.
