Under the new Decree on Incentives for Investment in Audio-Visual Works, which the Government of Serbia adopted ahead of the New Year, in order for the producer of a TV series or ad to get 25% of the investment back from the state, they now have to invest at least EUR 300,000 per episode or ad, instead of EUR 100,000.

– An average episode costs 80,000 to 90,000 euros. Local producers in no way have the capacity for a budget of EUR 300,000 per episode and it is completely unrealistic in the conditions we live in. it can only be met by foreigners who come to produce here – Zoran Jankovic of Kosutnjak Film says for Novosti.

Rados Bajic of Contrast Studios says that the decree only benefits Serbian producers who bring foreign productions to the country.

When it comes to film projects, under the new decree, the threshold for the government to subsidize the making of local and foreign films is also EUR 300,000. For projects which exceed EUR 500,000 and whose content does not jeopardize the reputation of the Serbian state, a return of 30% can be made, which means that it will still be cheaper for foreigners to shoot in Serbia than at home, the daily writes.
