Serbian open-source IoT cloud platform Mainflux Labs used by corporations from Texas, Russia and Germany

The startup Mainflux Labs is working on developing an open-source IoT platform which solves the problem of connecting devices, controlling them and remote-transferring messages from their sensors and actuators and is used by corporations worldwide.

– Mainflux is practically an Internet of Things platform, but it goes beyond merely connecting devices. We now call it an Internet of Everything platform – as it can also be used to connect apps and other entities which need to exchange messages in a secure way – says CEO Drasko Draskovic, an electrical engineer and the initial author and instigator of the project, who started working on open-source projects during his studies, especially in the embedded Linux kernel domain, namely, OpenWRT, OpenOCD and U-Boot.

He explains that this IoT platform solves the problem of connecting devices, controlling them and remote-transferring messages from their sensors and actuators. This is the main infrastructural building block of complex systems for the connecting and automation of factories, smart cities, transport and many other systems. By using the Mainflux open-source technology, the customers get an open, interoperable and modular system suitable for further development, modifications and integration, avoiding the so-called vendor lock, that is, being dependent on a single producer.

The most common users are companies which develop complex systems in which apps need to make decisions based on reading a large number of sensors or remote-managing various robots and other physical devices (whether switches, relays, electro-motors or other actuators).

A corporation from Texas which exploits oil uses the devices to monitor oil rigs at remote locations, in deserts or oceans, connected through the Mainflux platform and the 4G mobile network. An AI/ML company from Russia uses their technology to connect trains in order to acquire data which are then used in their algorithms for predicitive maintenance. Also, a pharmaceutical giant from Germany, uses the technology to connect machines in a factory through Mainflux. These are just some of the clients the startup has cooperated with so far.
