Y-road opens to traffic – Bypass route around Subotica, 24 km long, completed after three decades

The bypass route around Subotica on Corridor 10, the so-called Y-road, 24 kilometers long, opened to traffic this Friday, December 27, after three decades of construction.

The road connects Kelebija with the Horgos-Novi Sad highway and moves heavy cargo traffic from the center of Subotica, through which around 300 trucks pass each day.

In the past four years, RSD 2.8 billion (around EUR 25 million) has been invested in the completion of the construction of the bypass route around Subotica. The works on the final section, 12 kilometers long, from the Kelebija border crossing to the round intersection with the Sombor Road, began in April 2019, and the value of those works was RSD 1.73 million.

The opening was attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, who said that, after the construction of the Belgrade-Budapest railway, Serbia and Hungary would have an even better connection and not just in terms of transport either.

– We will grow even closer in order to protect the common values of Central Europe and build a common future – Vucic said.

He announced the construction of the traffic route Bezdan-Backi Breg, which will cost EUR 5 million. The president of the Assembly of Vojvodina, Istvan Pasztor, said that the new traffic route made Subotica more attractive to investors, to the benefit of the entire Serbia.

– In the past years, regional roads are being built in Serbia and there are great efforts to modernize the traffic infrastructure. We are always trying to attract investors, as it means not only new jobs but creating a future as well – Pasztor said.
