Port of Rijeka to have container terminal built at 40 ha in Sremska Mitrovica - about 5m EUR set aside for first phase

The contract on cooperation between Rijeka-based company "Jadranska vrata" and company "Panonska vrata" from Sremska Mitrovica was signed on October 30th, 2009, in the administrative building of the Rijeka harbor. The aim of that contract is to increase the flow of containers between the ports of "Rijeka" and "Leget".
Namely, the Rijeka harbor's container terminal at 40 ha will be opened in port "Leget", which will enable further development of that port. According to the words of the CEO of the "Rijeka" harbor, Denis Vukorepa, the best location for that terminal has been sought for two years, and the terminal will finally be opened in the first quarter of year 2010.
The CEO of the Port Administration of "Rijeka", Bojan Hlača, pointed out that the opening of that terminal represented one of the steps towards the final goal - transformation of the Rijeka harbor into the first container terminal in the region. He expressed his satisfaction with the fact that the contract was signed by the logistics companies from Rijeka, which means that they recognized the importance of the project.
According to the words of the CEO of Port "Legat", Zoran Nešić,
the first phase of the project is worth about 5m EUR, while somewhat larger funds will be invested in the second phase. "Leget" will comprise the distribution terminal for Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Bulgaria, and other countries in the region.
The Mayor of Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel, said that the signing of that contract was very important moment in the development of the Rijeka harbor, pointing out that it was planned to be one of the most important ports in southeast Europe.
- Signing of this contract gives the optimism for further development of the Rijeka harbor and harbor business, which has always been and will always be one of the major fields of economy in this city - said Obersnel.
