The capital of Austria has completed the testing of intelligent traffic lights for pedestrians. In the autumn of 2019, the first intersections will be equipped with cameras and software.

Intelligent traffic lights will successively replace around 200 button-based traffic lights currently used in Vienna. The new traffic lights are able to recognize a pedestrian approaching. Based on the direction of the movement and the person’s behavior, the computer program decides whether the person really wants to cross the street or merely to walk past the traffic lights.

Currently, traffic lights for pedestrians are being sought in cooperation with urban municipalities where this intelligent computer system would be needed the most. The requirement is for a lot of people to want to cross the street in irregular intervals and for there to be an increased traffic rate at the same time.

These traffic lights would be especially useful near schools, pools and locations where large events are held.

The cameras would not be used for surveillance. They will record a certain moment, encrypt the data and then delete them.

The system of intelligent traffic lights was created by a team at TU Graz in cooperation with the City of Vienna.
