Pavilion of Natalie's ramonda – Potential installation in Belgrade

The Natalie's Ramonda Pavilion project is one of those that are being presented at the 8th International Landscape Architecture Exhibition, taking place between June 5 and 28. The authors Biljana Jovic and Mirjana Komnenov, from the Faculty of Forestry in Belgrade, were inspired by Natalia's ramonda flower (Ramonda nathaliae P. et P.), also known as the phoenix flower, the symbol of Armistice Day in Serbia, celebrated on November 11.

When asked why they chose to present this project, the authors told eKapija:

– We wanted to look deeper into the possibilities of implementing organic forms in design, using the simple characteristics of the flower which inspired us, in order to translate it into a kind of an organic form that preserves the characteristics of the flower.

The model was prepared using software and designer's tools and materialized with the help of a 3D printer. The flower petal was transformed into a Voronoi diagram and shaped into a pergola. It is designed as a landscape-architecture spatial installation.

– When we started the research that resulted in the pavilion model, we didn't think about the possibilities of concrete realization. We wanted to present our model as an example of the implementation of an organic form into something that might be produced in the near future, as the digital printing technology is progressing – Biljana Jovic says.

As examples, she cited the first building to be printed out with a special concrete mixture in China and the printed steel bridge in Amsterdam.

– Comparing the possibilities we have, we are still far from it. As things stand here and now, in order to carry out this project, we would have to use, for example, wooden or steel structures or light aluminum frames and glass or plexiglass. The choice of materials would depend on the dimensions of the pavilion, and if it was to be realized, we would certainly seek expert advice, so that the construction would be stable and safe for use – Jovic emphasized.



She says that, so far, there have not been any offers for the installation of the pavilion, but she believes that it would be very good for it to be located in a representative open space in the city center, such as the open space near the Belgrade University Rectorate, the arboretum at the Faculty of Forestry, the Botanical Garden and maybe even bus and tram stops throughout the city.

The project was presented in Tokyo, Japan, in the final of the ADMC 2017 contest, as well as at the Students' Cultural Center and the University Library in Belgrade.

Nature-inspired works, under the mentorship of our interviewee, were also presented at the International Conference on Geometry and Graphics in Milan (August 2018), and one of these works will be presented at Asian Forum on Graphic Science (AFGS 2019), held this year in China. Biljana Jovic will take part in it as a member of the science board of this important conference.

– I've just received a very nice confirmation of the direction we are developing in being the right one, by taking part in the Cumulus conference in Finland, where I had the pleasure to be a member of the International Reviewer Board, while receiving a grant for my participation, which is a great incentive for further work in this field – Jovic says.
