China has unveiled a prototype of the maglev (magnetic levitation) train with the maximum speed of 600 km/h. The project is being developed by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC).

CRRC’s deputy chief engineer Ding Sansan said that the prototype was meant to test the key technologies and systemic components of these trains.

The company has built production centers for testing high-speed trains in Qingdao, and the operations are expected to start in the second half of the year. A single-car prototype should be used for a 5-km test ride in 2020. The company plans to complete the testing process in 2021.

If it becomes operational, the train will fill the gap between 350-400-km/h trains and passenger planes with the speed of 800 km/h.

The first commercial maglev train was put into operation in Nagoia, Japan.
