Construction of 11 marinas on Danube, Tisza, Tamis, Bega and DTD Canal soon(Illustration) According to a study prepared by the Urban Planning Institute of Vojvodina and the Belgrade-based company Ehting, in cooperation with the Provincial Secretariat for Economy and Tourism, in addition to the Bega, the construction of marinas is planned on another 10 locations on the Danube, the Tisza, the Sava and the Tamis.

The director of the Urban Planning Institute of Vojvodina, Predrag Knezevic, said on RTV that the study planned five marinas on the Danube, two on the Tisza and one each on the DTD Canal, the Sava and the Tamis. The marinas are meant for vessels of 6.5 to 12 meters.

– When it comes to the Danube, marinas are planned in Backo Novo Selo, Sremski Karlovci, Stari Banovci, Kovin and Stara Palanka. On the Tisza, these are Senta and Titel, on the Sava, it's Sremska Mitrovica, and on the Bega, it's Zrenjanin. When it comes to the Tamis, the marina will be in Pancevo. As for the DTD system, this is the first analysis of it, and the marina will be located in Srbobran – Knezevic says.

The completion of these works, Knezevic points out, depends on the state of the given microlocation. The optimal deadline is 4 to 5 months from the preparation of the documentation and the obtaining of the building permit.

As for the marina on the Bega, the project also entails the construction of a terminal in the center of Zrenjanin, the reconstruction of 4 navigation locks, 2 in Zrenjanin, 2 in Timisoara, so that the project might be completed in August 2021, making the Bega navigable again, Deputy Mayor of Zrenjanin Dusko Radisic said on RTV.

The project also entails the formation of a bicycle lane on the outer rim of the canal, from the terminal in Zrenjanin to the Romanian border. This could bring new tourists to Zrenjanin, as a new waterway between the two neighboring states would open.

The works on the cleaning of the Bega, which will mark the beginning of the project, begin in spring.
