(Ferdinand Ayen) The Klett Group is a leading education company in Europe and is represented internationally in 16 countries. The range of products includes classic and modern educational media for everyday school life, as well as lesson preparation, specialist literature and fine literature. In addition, the Klett Group operates numerous educational institutions ranging from day-care centers and schools to distance learning schools, vocational schools and universities.

As the youngest school, Klett Dual will start operating mechatronics courses in the center of Belgrade in March 2019.

In his interview with eKapija, Ferdinand Ayen, the CEO of the Klett DUAL school, explains what makes the program different from other models of dual education in Serbia, who the industrial mechatronics courses are meant for, who the lecturers will be and what the plans for the implementation of new education profiles are.

eKapija: What dual training do you want to offer in Serbia?

– Klett Dual wants to start with three variants of industrial mechatronics training. First of all, there will be a six-week full-time school course called "Mechatronics ABC". This will be followed in April by a three-month dual course in machine maintenance. In autumn, a two-year post-secondary dual education program begins, modeled on the German mechatronics apprenticeship.

eKapija: In Serbia, there are already several opportunities for dual training. What makes Klett different?

– Our program is not aimed at secondary school students, but at young adults who already have a degree. So we are "post-secondary" and want to help fill the gap between secondary school and university in Serbia.

Our curricula are oriented towards the needs of locally active companies: there is a school-based and a dual short course, and there is a dual two-year training course. Didactically, we strictly follow the principle of active learning and a solution-oriented approach that is customary in Germany, and we have given very high priority to training our teachers.

eKapija: How can we understand the demand orientation? Can everyone wish for what is to be taught?

– Not quite. Of course, we always have to find a common denominator for different customers. But there is already an example of an adaptation: in recent years, the topic “Industry 4.0” has developed into a real megatrend. It is no longer a specialty of a few high-tech companies, but a broad one, even among medium-sized Serbian companies.

We didn`t plan this so extensively in the early concepts of the curricula. Today, Industry 4.0 is an integral part of all three mechatronics courses.

eKapija: What made you decide to go to Serbia?

– The main reason lies in Serbia`s strong industrial tradition and geographical location: the country has had close economic ties with the EU, Russia and Turkey, and stable economic development in recent years. In addition, with the Klett Serbia publishing house we have sister companies on site that have many years of experience in the Serbian education market and support us in planning and implementation.

eKapija: How did you prepare yourself for the start of the lessons in March?

– After the decision had been made to start with the mechatronics technician and the curricula had been completed, we first recruited teachers and trained them in didactics together with experts from the Freiburg University of Education. Then we divided the curricula into action-oriented teaching units, so-called learning situations, and finally conducted a trial course with "real" vocational students in our classrooms and our training workshop in Belgrade.

eKapija: Who are your customers?

– In principle, we address two customers: Young adults who have successfully completed secondary school and want to continue their professional training, and companies with a need for skilled workers.

eKapija: Will you stick with mechatronics, or are you also planning other profiles?

– We have several other profiles in the planning stage, for example in logistics and tourism, both of which are also strongly growing industries. Soon after the opening of the school, we will be putting these plans into concrete terms and implementing them.
