DJORDJEVIC: New occupational health and safety laws in 2019

Serbian Minister of Labor, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy Zoran Djordjevic announced today that new laws on occupational health and safety and employees' insurance would be adopted in 2019 so as to reduce the number of fatal workplace injuries, of which there were 53 in 2018.

– In the past period, we've adopted 56 bylaws and assembled a collection of regulations in the field of occupational health and safety. However, what was missing is insurance – Djordjevic told the press after a meeting with representatives of the Administration for Occupational Health and Safety, legal entities and enterprises.

The acting director of the Administration for Occupational Health and Safety, Marina Furtula, said that, of the 53 fatal workplace injuries in 2018, 15 had happened in the construction sector, 13 had happened in manufacturing, whereas the remaining 25 had occurred in the metal industry, transport and the storage sector.

– Last year, we revoked six licenses for occupational health and safety operations, as those legal entities and enterprises had failed to do their job in line with the law and the pertinent regulations – Furtula said.

She said that the inspection had determined that only 30% of the legal entities and enterprises in Serbia in this field had complied with the law.
