The list is dominated by Slovenian and Croatian wineries, and Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina get one place each, as does Serbia, with Radovan, a 100% Prokupac grape wine from 2015, made at the Cokot winery from the village of Starci. The winery is owned by enologist Radovan Djordjevic, and the eponymous wine was pronounced the most pleasant surprise by Vino.rs last year.
Gilby says that “this tiny and impressive new-wave garage winery has been busy reinventing Serbia’s native Prokupac grape,” and adds that “this wine has inviting aromas of black cherry and forest fruits.”
Before listing her favorites, Gilby reminded the readers of Decanter that Yugoslavia used to have 220,000 hectares of vineyards and that it used to be one of the ten largest wine producers in the world, adding that today’s winemakers are intensively trying to bring local winemaking back to its old glory.
