Minister of Trade Tourism and Telecommunications of Serbia Rasim Ljajic said that the reconstruction of the Golubac Fortress was being completed and that it would open for visitors at the beginning of the next travel season.
– Although the realization is late, primarily due to archaeological works, it is worth the wait – Ljajic told the press while visiting the Golubac Fortress.
He specified that around 90% of the works had been completed and that the interior development of the main palace, the central structure within the complex, should be completed before December 5. By March 2019, he said, metal stairs leading to all the towers will be available.
Ljajic said that, in 2018, the complex had been visited by 80 thousand tourists, half of which were local tourists, whereas the other half were guests from Romania.
This year, Golubac was visited by 44 cruise ships with 3,500 tourists, mostly from the USA, Australia and the UK, the minister added.
– Next year, we expect between 100 and 150,000 tourists, once all the structures are completed – Ljajic said.
The minister said that the Golubac Fortress would be a new travel destination in Serbia and that it could become one of the leading ones.
