The company Iron Ox has opened its first automated plant farm in San Carlos, California. They claim that their system can raise the production volume by 30% compared to traditional farms, while using 90% less water.
When a plant grows, a robot transports it to the processing area. The robot's hand can also move a small plant to where there's more room. This optimizes space usage, a very important factor in plant growth.
Co-founder and CEO of Iron Ox Brandon Alexander reveals that he wants to make more small farms close to city centers so that products could reach the stores as fresh as possible.
The robots are capable of machine learning, an their AI allows them to detect pests and diseases. Also the robots can remove certain plants so as to prevent the problem from spreading.
Iron Ox uses LED lights in its production process, but aims to build a plastic green house with natural light in order to use free solar energy.
The end goal of the company is for healthy products to be inexpensive. They grow green vegetables only for now, but the production might expand to include tomatoes and other vegetables.
