The reconstruction of the old capital of Serbia will last for the next four years. The project has just begun, and the money for the first phase was provided by the Ministry of Culture and the City of Krusevac.

Four decades after the last explorations at the Krusevac Fortress complex, archaeologists and restorers have gathered again, looking to give the old Serbian capital, the construction of which was begun by Prince Lazar in 1374, a look suiting its historical importance.

– In this four-year campaign, the western rampart, 2.5 meters high and 50 meters long, will be reconstructed. This will be accompanied with archaeological explorations – says archaeologist Marin Bugar of the National Museum in Krusevac.

The first findings about the look of the City of Prince Lazar and the life behind its walls were provided by archaeological explorations in the mid-60s and the late 70s, when the site was also partially reconstructed.

– Except for the keep, the remains that are visible now have all been extended at some point, which can be considered the first restoration. This site is of national importance and could also be important in another sense, as a travel destination – says Goran Vasic, the director of the National Museum in Krusevac.

Next year, the northern rampart will be reconstructed, whereas the third phase entails the reconstruction of the keep. Finally, the development of the Prince’s Palace and the side structures, along with the installation of decorative lighting, will be carried out in the final phase.

With the completion of all four phases, the medieval Krusevac Fortress will get a whole new look. The aim is to restore the site to resemble its appearance from six and a half centuries ago, when it was built as the capital of the Moravian Serbia of Prince Lazar.
