Autostrade per l'Italia, the Italian company in charge of almost half of the country's motorway network, has set aside EUR 500 million to rebuild the viaduct in Genoa which collapsed several days ago, causing the deaths of at least 40 people.

– These are funds that will be available from Monday – Autostrade per l'Italia chief executive Giovanni Castellucci said at a press conference, AFP reports.

He said it would take eight months to build a new steel bridge in place of what was left of the viaduct.

Castellucci also announced that tolls on highways around Genoa would be abolished.
