(Illustration) The European Commission has loosened regulations in agriculture and will accelerate the payment of funds to European farmers struck by extreme drought.

Farmers in the EU will be able to receive up to 70% of their direct payment and 85% of payments under rural development already as of mid-October 2018 instead of waiting until December to improve their cash flow situation.

Europe is currently facing one of the hottest summers ever. Heat has devastated wheat fields across the northern regions of the continent, and the combination of dry weather and extreme rains in the Black Sea region has jeopardized the projected production of wheat. Due to this, the price of wheat in Europe jumped 20% in a short amount of time.

– I am very concerned about these prolonged climatic developments. I have been in contact with a number of ministers from affected countries to discuss the situation and get up-to-date assessments of its impact – Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan said, as reported by Tanjug.
