Reconstruction of Uzice fortress continues – Construction of suspension bridge to main road planned as well

The works on the conservation and the reconstruction of the Uzice fortress have continued. The aim is to preserve the time-worn fortifications of the Old Town and make them safe to visit, the City of Uzice says in its press release.

The first phase of the conservation and the reconstruction ended last year. It was financed by the Ministry of Culture with around RSD 6 million. The ministry didn't provide anything this year, but the City of Uzice set aside RSD 5 million from its budget and put it into the continuation of the works on the Uzice fortress.

– After several months of work with academic Brana Mitrovic, we had the preliminary idea for the Old Town, which entails the construction of a suspension bridge from the main road to the walls and a hospitality facility on the hill, to the right of the entrance to the Old Town, providing a panoramic view of Uzice. Along with the reconstruction of Via Drine, this will make for a serious tourism offer, which will attract tens of thousands of tourists – Petkovic said.

Ivan Milunovic, the director of the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments in Kraljevo, told us that the plan for 2018 entailed the consolidation of the walls of the middle town and archaeological explorations at the entrance gate.

– The project is the first on the list of priorities of our Institute and we expect to be able to fully realize certain preventive and urgent interventions on the fortress in a short amount of time and that we will complete the conservation and the restoration works as soon as possible, and then also the works on connecting tourism and culture, in order to attract tourists. This way, we will get the data about how the tower used to look, so that we could renew it and partially reconstruct it – Milunovic said.

As said, the estimate is that around 60-70 million dinars are needed for all the necessary works on the conservation and the reconstruction of the fortress to be completed.

Mayor Petkovic also announced the mounting of two flagpoles in the Old Town in the upcoming months. Flags of Serbia and the City of Uzice will be flown from the flagpoles.
