Foreigners spend around USD 1.5 billion in Russia during World Cup

The data of Sberbank Russia show that the foreigners who visited the country during the World Cup spent close to USD 1.5 billion.

Last year, during the FIFA Confederations Cup, which was also held in Russia, foreigners spent close to USD 700 million.

In the renowned Nikolskaya Street in Moscow, which leads to the Red Square and which is a popular tourist destination, sales tripled compared to the period before the World Cup, reaching USD 4 million.

Sberbank data do not include match tickets or hotel accommodation expenses.

It is estimated that the number of foreign tourists in the Russian cities which hosted the matches grew by 15% during the tournament, whereas the number of local tourists grew by 20 to 25%.

The 21st World Cup, held in Russia, took place between June 14 and July 15, 2018.
