After seven years of demanding works, the first testing is in progress, and the facility started taking in sewerage from Kula and Vrbas this spring.
– According to the latest information, it was said to us in consultations with the EU delegation that the final deadlines for the completion of the waste water treatment facility are around four months from now – the president of the Municipality of Vrbas, Milan Glusac, announces.
The central facility in Vrbas, he points out, is unique in Serbia and is one of the biggest financial projects of the EU delegation to Serbia, after the Zezelj Bridge.
– All of the water coming from Crvenka, Kula and Vrbas will be processed here and be let, with certain quality, into the Backa canal – Glusac explains.
The two municipalities have formed a joint utility enterprise for the needs of the management of the facility, the first such enterprise in Serbia, called Precistac Vrbas-Kula-Vrbas.
– With its own funds, the European Union has enabled Serbia to get closer to meeting certain EU directives and standards of waste water treatment, both municipal and industrial. In any case, this marks a good start of the protection of waterways flowing into the Danube – says the acting director of the said enterprise, Ranko Mitrovic.
The completion of the technical unit for the processing of sludge, worth EUR 2.7 million, is expected soon. When the facility in Vrbas starts working at full capacity, all the waste waters from the households and the industry of these two municipalities will be directed at the facility, preventing the pollution of the Backa canal.
