Locations for 54 new fountains in Belgrade known – Construction to begin in spring 2019

Belgrade City Manager Goran Vesic announced for Politika in which locations 54 fountains were to be built in Belgrade in the next several years and explained that they would not be pre-fabricated.

– For most of these fountains, there will be some kind of an architectural contest or we will choose architects who are already working with the city – Vesic said for Politika's triple holiday issue.

He pointed out that each fountain should be an artwork by itself, fitting into the area in which it is to be raised.

– The fountains will be installed in parks, on plazas, squares... Some will be plain, while some other may have an irregular shape. Some will cost EUR 10,000, EUR 20,000, but neither one will be as big as the one on the Slavija Square, as there's not enough room for a fountain of that size anywhere – Vesic said.

As he stated, the fountains will be raised in the Vojvode Bojovica Park, Terazije Terrace, Manjez, Sava Square, Autokomanda, Banovo Brdo Park, near the Stark Arena, Karadjordje Square and the City Park in Zemun, on the corner of the Cvijiceva and Starine Novaka Streets, Cvetni Trg, in front of the Municipality of Vozdovac building, Mali Tasmajdan, Friendship Park, in Rakovica in the Miska Kranjca Street near the church, in Zvezdara on the corner of the Milana Rakica Street and the Kralja Aleksandra Blvd, Batajnica...

Vesic also points out that the suburban municipalities will also get fountains and that they should be raised in the centers of these municipalities.

He notes that the number 54 has not been chosen randomly and that that many locations have been determined to fulfill the requirements, with authorization provided by all competent institutions.

The construction of these fountains might begin as soon as in the second half of 2018, but as the city manager says, it is more likely that the construction of the first 10-15 fountains will begin in the spring of 2019.

It is estimated that the completion of this endeavor will take four to six years, and how many are to be built each year will depend on the budget, but also on other projects in the city.

It is already known that the fountain in front of the Belgrade Drama Theater will have to wait for the plaza to be reconstructed. The works on the one on the Terazije Terrace will start once the full reconstruction of the area begins, and the same goes for the fountain on the Sava Square. The construction of the one in Bogoslovija, on the other hand, could practically begin tomorrow, Vesic announced.
