The newly built section of the highway from Demir Kapija to Smokvica opened for traffic on Monday, April 23, 2018, thereby completing Corridor 10 through Macedonia.

This is a 28.2-km section, thanks to which the travel time on the Friendship highway will be reduced by 25 minutes, the Macedonian agency MIA reported.

Over 700,000 vehicles are expected to travel down the highway each year, and the safer conditions and faster travel are expected to contribute to economic development and strengthening of cooperation in the region, Macedonian officials said.

The opening of the highway section was attended by Greek Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Spirtzis and Director General for Enlargement at the European Commission Christian Danielsson.

Let us remind that the construction of this highway section in Macedonia began in September 2012 and that the then government initially announced that the route would be completed in four years. The opening for traffic of the final connective section shortens and facilitates traveling down Corridor 10 through Macedonia. The route stretches along the right coast of the Vardar and features considerably milder bends and upward slopes than the current section on the other side of the river.
