The City Council of Nis adopted a decision on Friday, March 30, 2018, by which all the property and the management of the Nis Constantine the Great Airport are transferred to the Republic of Serbia.

As the explanation says, “the state will thereby help the airport become economically stronger and gain an even better position in the market, as the current state is not economically sustainable”.

The members of the City Assembly of Nis will vote on the decision at the next session.

The City of Nis has decided to hand the airport over to the Republic of Serbia without compensation.

– The Government of Serbia reached the decision at the session recommending to the City of Nis to first transfer the entire property of the Constantine the Great Airport, to transfer founding rights for the airport, to transfer the certificates of the PE Airport to the future operator, to transfer all the contracts pertaining to the company’s operations. Above all, this recommendation takes into account the public interest of the City of Nis, that is, all the citizens of Nis – said the head of the City Administration of Nis, Ljubisa Janic.

He explains that the Nis Airport is an alternative to the airport in Belgrade and airports in the region.

Janic says that the Government of Serbia has prepared an analysis according to which a billion dinars needs to be invested in the airport in order to secure its further functioning.

Citizens of Nis gathered in the city’s center on Saturday, March 31, 2018, in order to protest the decision of the City Council to transfer the property and the founding rights, certificates and contracts of the Constantine the Great Airport to the state.

The Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure said, as agencies report, that they would continue investing large amounts of money in the equipment, the development and the safety of the Nis Constantine the Great Airport, looking to turn the airport into an air transport center in its part of the region.

All the new investments, such as the future construction of a new tower, the works on the airport’s infrastructure, investments in safety and all other necessary equipment, as pointed out, are dedicated to increasing the number of passengers, launching new services and positioning the Nis Airport as a crucial air traffic spot in the region.

– We have shown that we are able to turn the Nikola Tesla Airport into the fastest growing airport in this part of southeast Europe and we want to turn Constantine the Great Airport into the best possible airport it can be. For this reason, we want to help Nis and do this together – the ministry says in its press release.
