NASA asks you to photograph clouds

NASA is asking people from all over the world to share cloud photos with it through a special app.

This project is being carried out in cooperation with citizens for the purpose of the validation of data gathered through six instruments observing the Earth through various satellites.

The instruments are a part of the project called “Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System”, which aims to improve the understanding of the role of clouds in global climate change.

Clouds are, however, sometimes very hard to identify from above. Thin cirrus clouds, the most common type of high-altitude clouds, are hard to tell apart from the snow, for example, NASA says. Satellite observations therefore need to be compared to those from the Earth.

If you want to take part in this challenge, the easiest way is to download the Globe Observer app, which will provide step-by-step instructions as to how to send cloud photos to the space agency.

If you like to observe and analyze changes in the sky, the app will help you learn more about astronomy.

NASA says that the project is being initiated now as there will be interesting cloud activity this spring. The change of seasons might prove quite stormy, and NASA wants to double-check the data from one of the instruments it launched in November 2017.

Everyone who wants their photos to reach NASA may send up to ten photographs each day by April 15.
