The flooring is an important segment in the design of a house, an apartment, office and any other type of space. The energy of the room largely depends on it. Parquet flooring, arranged in the so-called herringbone pattern, or a classic partner, is going out of style, and other patterns and different types of flooring are taking over.

Adjusting their products to the demand, the producers change the way of manufacturing and the structure of the flooring itself. The Belgrade-based company Ligna Drvo stopped producing classic parquet flooring in 2016, after 23 years of operations. Today, they produce double- and triple-layer parquet with a lacquer finish, making it ready to be laid down without any additional processing. As the company explains, the biggest demand among buyers and investors in Serbia is for the double-layer parquet flooring.

– The type of flooring we currently produce is technologically entirely different from the parquet which we used to produce until recently, the one made of full-body wood – Miroslav Pejcic of Ligna Drvo begins his interview for eKapija.

The laminated double-layer parquet they make consists, he says, of an upper oak layer of 3-4 mm and a lower layer of birch plywood, which is imported from Russia.

– The triple-layer parquet, which is somewhat thicker, contains another layer of wood, making this type of flooring very stable and resistant to various kinds of impact. It goes through grinding, brushing and other processing stages, depending on the needs of the customer. It is eventually painted and special UV lacquers and oils are applied – our interviewee explains.

Controlled exploitation of wood

The company purchases the wood, which is the main raw material, from renewable and controlled forests, and they primarily use oak from Slavonija, from the Posavina, Podrinje and Macva areas. They also import raw materials from Ukraine and Russia, and the materials for the finishing and the laying down of the flooring are mostly imported as well.

The fact that sources of raw materials, especially of quality oak, are limited is one of the biggest challenges for Ligna Drvo, our interviewee says.

– Few people know that the structure of the oak depends primarily on the area in which the trees grow, and we aim to provide our customers with top quality oak only, which is very limited. As a natural material, wood can be found in the nature, but its exploitation needs to be strictly controlled – Pejcic points out.

Another challenge, he adds, is the constant technological development and purchase of new equipment, making development in this sector relatively long and expensive. The wood processing itself takes several months, according to our interviewee, and big investments are therefore needed in order to get the highest quality product.

In addition to double- and triple-layer parquets, Ligna Drvo also produces three classes of multi-layer parquet flooring – Selekt, Natur and Rustik. They adapt the products in line with client demand, offering the so-called tailormade concept, that is, enabling customers to get the exact kind of product they want. In addition to the production and the delivery, they offer the services of laying the flooring down.

Around 100,000 square meters of wooden flooring is produced at the Belgrade company's workshop each year. Most of it sold in the local market, and a certain amount is exported to the countries of Western Europe.

– Considering that we've recently established the new production, switching to multilayer parquet, it's still to early to talk about continuous exports. We plan to have the biggest product marketing possible in the upcoming period, as well as to purchase new production equipment, all to the end of increasing the sales of the parquet flooring and installation materials. Continuous exports are certainly the end goal.

As a small producer of flooring, they manage to persevere in a market that features strong competition and big producers through quality and affordable prices, Pejcic says.

– In addition to considerable experience, another advantage of ours is that we offer a local product which matches imported parquet flooring in quality – our interviewee points out.

In addition to flooring, Ligna Drvo, which took part in last year's Furniture Fair in Belgrade, also produces wall covering made of wood of large dimensions, as well as covering strips. They offer their products and materials wholesale, and they also sell them at their retail salon in Belgrade.
