Vienna producing electrical and heating energy from Christmas trees

Christmas trees which used to decorate homes in the capital of Austria are used to produce electrical and heating energy after the holidays. Over 2,5 million trees have been used for this purpose so far, the Office of the City of Vienna in Belgrade announced on Wednesday, December 27, 2017.

Around 500 tons, that is, 160,000 trees, were thermally processed in Vienna after the latest winter holidays, producing over 1,700 MWh. This was enough to supply 975 households with electricity and 2,280 households with heating for a month.

From December 27 till January 14, a total of 530 public collection points for a professional removal of Christmas trees are available to the citizens of Vienna. The trees can also be disposed of at waste collection points.

Since the used trees started being collected in 1990, a total of 11,200 tons, that is, more than 2.5 million trees, has been professionally removed in Vienna.
