Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases Dedinje first in region to implant artificial heart

The first artificial heart in the region was implanted at the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases Dedinje, Novosti reports.

Thanks to the procedure performed by a team of doctors from the Institute on Saturday, December 9, 2017, a 43-year-old patient, with a considerably weakened heart, gained considerable time to wait for a suitable organ and a transplantation.

The mechanical heart is similar in size to the natural one. It is fueled by batteries, which the patient is to carry in a 6-kg backpack following his discharge from the hospital.

The operation took nearly five hours. Each detail was filmed, and the video is to be shown to the public.

The director of the Institute, Milovan Bojic, said that Dedinje had another artificial heart available. He also explains that a fully artificial heart has both atriums and ventricles, valves and grafts.

The first fully artificial heart was implanted by cardiac surgeons Aleksandar Nikolic and Sasa Borovic, Sinisa Jagodic administered anesthesia, and the team also included two cardiologists.
