The City of Nis has today adopted a decision to amend the Detailed Regulation Plan of the Konstantin Veliki Airport, which will enable for about two hectares of city land to be sold to the Flight Controls of Serbia and Montenegro (SMATSA) for the construction of new control tower at the sirport in Nis.

Igor Igic, secretary of the Secretariat for Planning and Construction, said SMATSA provided EUR 14 m for the construction and furnishing of the tower at the Konstantin Veliki airport

- The city provides documentation necessary for the construction, and we hope that the works will start next year – Igic said.

He added that urban design project and preliminary design of the new control tower have already been completed.

- New control tower will allow flight control in Serbia, Montenegro and in parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It will represent a spare version of the tower in Belgrade – Igic said.

Igic said the tower will be built on the northern side of the Nis airport and will be 26.5 meters high.

He reminded that the existing tower was made in 1993 as a temporary solution and could no longer satisfy the needs of the Nis airport as a modern airport.
