Insurance in case of cancer for the first time in Serbia

The data of the reference health institutions say that around 36,000 get cancer each year in Serbia, whereas nearly 19,000 lose their lives fighting the disease, Janko Samardzic, a clinical pharmacology specialist, stated today.

– Aside from systematic check-ups and favoring healthy life-stiles, another thing that might improve early detection of cancer is a program of additional health insurance – Samardzic said, thereby supporting the new insurance program in case of the development of cancer, organized by Dunav Osiguranje under the name of Cancer Protect.

According to him, Serbia is facing not just a statistical increase in the number of cancer patients, but also the late discovery of the disease, which, as Samardzic says, means that we do not pay enough attention to prevention.

– Dunav Osiguranje has recognized the need for health insurance in case of cancer, which is realized for the first time here in cooperation with experts and health institutions – Samardzic emphasized.

As he pointed out, he believes that Serbia needs this type of prevention and hopes that the response will be adequate, as it is necessary for our society to dedicate itself to preventive examinations performed prior to the signing of the insurance policy.

He pointed out that the insurance offered two forms of risk protection – protection from financial risk and the risk of further development of the disease.

– On the one hand, there is insurance from financial risk, because, if a cancer diagnosis is made during the period of the validity of the insurance, the costs of treatment are covered by the mandatory health insurance – Samardzic explained.

He specified that this type of health insurance also entailed the possibility of another doctor's opinion, another new feature in Serbia.

As he explained, this means that, in case of cancer diagnosis, that is, in case of suspicion of a certain kind of malign diseases, it is possible to ask for an expert opinion from colleagues from health institutions such as Harvard Medical School and London's King's College Hospital, who might suggest a certain type of treatment, but also confirm or refute a diagnosis.

– The existence of another doctor's opinion is something I consider the most important segment of the insurance, as we often face the problem of a suitable treatment protocol even today, with developed diagnostics and therapy – Samardzic underlined.

The experience of the countries with the most developed health protection, which provide insurance in case of cancer, he says, shows that such a model is the most efficient one for people who take care of their health and prevention.

The Cancer Protect program of Dunav Osiguranje, as a special form of additional health insurance, entails the payment of an agreed sum or a part of it if the first cancer diagnosis is made during the period of the validity of the insurance, the company's representatives say.
