Serbia fulfills plans in competition protection in EU accession negotiation process

The plans in the process of negotiations about the accession of Serbia to the European Union related to enhancing the bylaw framework in the field of protection competition have been fulfilled, president of the Commission for Protection of Competition, Miloje Obradovic, said on Friday, October 13, 2017.

He said that, to the end of having the best possible public discussion, the deadline for submission of comments and opinions regarding the draft Decree on agreements on technology transfer and Decree on agreements between participants in the market of railway and road transport and transport on inland waterways exempt from the ban had been extended.

Obradovic announced the possibility of the foundation of a regional forum for protection of competition, with the seat in Belgrade, which would be sponsored by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Commission for Protection of Competition reported.

It was said at the meeting that it was in the interest of the society as a whole for the Commission to have instruments at its disposal which would enable it to effectively protect competition, thereby further stimulating the development of the competitiveness of the Serbian economy, without which Serbia would not be able to enjoy maximum benefits for its citizens and its economy in the process of joining the European Union.

As pointed out, this should be enabled by the new law on protection of competition, which is being prepared by a working group formed by the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications.

The head of Serbia's EU accession negotiation team, Tanja Miscevic, pointed out that the policy of protection of competition in Serbia, and the activities of the Commission in particular, had been rated highly by both the team carrying out the EU accession negotiations on behalf of Serbia and the Brussels administration.

She reminded that the activities of the Commission for Protection of Competition within Chapter 8 – Competition Policy had been included in the latest report by the European Commission, but also that it had been rated as one of the sections of the Serbian administration most in line with the EU legal acquis in informal contacts with the EC representatives.

She said that it was important to further enhance the operations of the Commission and praised the transparency of the process of preparation of the new law on protection of competition, the press release emphasizes.
