The Ministry of Agriculture placed a job ad for employment at the National Milk Control Laboratory today, as a requirement for the beginning of the operations of an independent lab that Serbia has waited for for years and which has been equipped using the funds provided by the European Union and Serbia.

As Agrosmart learns, this laboratory, as part of the Directorate for National Reference Laboratories (DNRL) in Batajnica, has been fully equipped and will start operating once the job contest is completed.

The laboratory is equipped for testing the chemical composition of milk, the level of aflatoxins in milk and food and the presence of bacteria and viruses in food.

The Ministry has opened a job contest for four experts. The application deadline is eight days from the placement of the ad by the National Employment Service.

The opening of this laboratory will mark the beginning of independent control of raw milk, as the starting ingredient for the production of milk and milk products in the country, but also the start of the completion of several years of establishment of national reference laboratories.

Since 2004, around EUR 15 million has been set aside from the budget of the European Union for all laboratories in the territory of Serbia, of which around EUR 7.88 million for the equipping and reconstruction of labs within the DNRL. The Republic of Serbia has also invested considerable funds. A total of EUR 3.68 million has been set aside from the state budget.

The national reference laboratory system consists of four units – the plant gene bank, which is operational, the phytosanitary control lab, also operational, and the equipment for the food safety lab is expected to be completed this year as well, whereas the milk lab is to start operating after the experts have been hired.

The EU has also taken active part in the realization of the project of forming and establishing the DNRL system by financing the reconstruction of buildings, premises and the procurement of equipment and by providing expert services on several occasions in the form of technical aid to the Republic of Serbia.
