Professor Pavle Kovacevic, cardiovascular surgeon at the Institute for Cardiovascular Surgery in Sremska Kamenica, says that Serbia will have to employ biomedical engineers in each medical institution while joining the European Union.
– Each hospital with MRI, laparoscopy, or other kinds of differential technology, will have to hire people familiar with the technological details. I witnessed a robot-assisted operation in Cleveland. While the surgeon was operating, the engineer was present throughout, in case something went wrong – Kovacevic explains.
Following this vision, he and his colleagues and friends, professors Zoran Bjelica, Marko Milos and Nikola Jorgovanovic, managed to have the new course program established.
– Through the new course program and the newly founded association, we will try to educate doctors, who, unfortunately, learn from old books which are not up to date with the trends. New technologies can save people's lives, so they're not that expensive after all. Above all, this will facilitate doctors' jobs, because, in case there's a problematic patient, they will be able to consult their colleagues through the network in order to find the best solution for the treatment – Kovacevic says.
The first Association of Clinical Engineers of Serbia was founded recently. It will organize free scientific gatherings for students.
– There is a great interest in this field and young people have recognized this, as it opens countless possibilities of telemedicine, virtual medicine, robot-medicine and similar fields. This is the future of human healthcare – solving a big problem with the least invasive methods possible – Kovacevic points out.
