In the third quarter of the business year 2016/17, METRO realized a strong operating development with an increase of like-for-lake sales by 2.6% compared to last year. As the company reported, total sales grew by 4.9% to EUR 9.3 billion thanks to foreign exchange gains and the acquisition of Pro a Pro, a French food distribution company.
EBIT rose to EUR 215 million compared to EUR 68 million from last year's corresponding period. EBIT before special items amounted to EUR 230 million, compared to EUR 239 million in the third quarter of 2015/16.
Looking by the comparative nine-month period, METRO's sales improved by 0.5% compared to last year. Total sales grew by 1.9% to EUR 27.9 billion, whereas EBIT dropped from EUR 942 million to EUR 720 million. The drop is primarily down to special items amounting to EUR 120 million for the measures of restructuring Real and METRO Wholesale, as well as capital gains from the sale of METRO Cash & Carry Vietnam, which are included in last year's calculation. EBIT before special items rose to EUR 840 million, compared to EUR 741 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.
– METRO has shown a strong operational development in the first quarter that we report on as an independent, stock listed company after the demerger of METRO GROUP. The sustainable sales trend shows that we have become more relevant for our customers worldwide, a large proportion of which are restaurateurs. We have seen very strong sales increases, especially in the delivery business – says Olaf Koch, Chairman of the Management Board of METRO AG.
