Bulgaria started building a nuclear waste storage near its only nuclear power plant on the Danube.Bulgarian Minister Temenuska Petkova said the project at Kozloduy is "extremely important for nuclear energy development in Bulgaria".Low and medium radioactive waste which will be stored at that site mainly comes from closure of four old nuclear reactors.Bulgaria closed four old reactors of Soviet production in Kozloduy for security reasons and because it was a condition for joining the European Union in 2007.In Kozloduy, located on the Danube, not far from the triple border with Romania and Serbia, there were also two nuclear reactors from the Soviet era.It is expected that the warehouse will start functioning in 2021.The fund managed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) finances the project of construction of a warehouse with EUR 73m.
